Things to think about
Feeding a crowd is all about getting the quantities right, so a little planning goes a long way. Start by working out how many people you’re catering for, how many meals you’ll need, and whether you’ll be eating in every day or having a few meals out.
As a rough guide, we suggest around four large chickens for 12 people, depending on their size and how much everyone eats. For a BBQ, plan for around 250 to 350g of meat per adult, plus plenty of salads, bread and veggie options. Don’t forget breakfast essentials, snacks for hungry walkers, drinks and the all-important extras like cooking oil, herbs, condiments and tea and coffee.
It’s also worth checking dietary requirements in advance, planning meals that share ingredients to cut down on waste, and leaving a little room in the budget for unexpected appetites. A well-planned food shop means more time enjoying good food and great company.
For the essentials, save yourself the supermarket trip and arrange a bulk grocery delivery from Tesco or Waitrose, making sure to book your slot in advance.
For meat lovers, a trip to the wonderful Philip Warren & Son in Launceston is a must, while the Wet Fish Shop at the Beach House, Widemouth Bay is our favourite spot for fresh fish.
And, of course, no Cornish group stay feels complete without pasties eaten on the beach.
If you’re celebrating a special occasion, why not treat everyone to a catered meal and let someone else do the cooking? The secret is to plan a few shared meals, leave room for spontaneous treats and make the most of being together.
